Moving and handling people
This course deals specifically with the handling of people and is relevant to healthcare workers/providers.
It follows a minimal handling/lifting policy, however, it includes guidance and practical training on handling aids, and importantly risk assessment.
Who should attend?
The course is designed for all carers who need to lift/handle people
What they will learn?
How to move people safely, so that moving and handling risks are reduced to the lowest level.
Course content
- Background on Moving and Handling
- Statistics on back pain and number of days taken off sick across all industries due to this problem
- 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act
- 1992 Manual Handling regulations
- How to care for the back
- Risk assessing Moving and Handling activities
Practical session of using moving and handling equipment. This can include all equipment within the workplace, including:
- Mobile hydraulic hoists
- Mobile electric hoists
- Overhead (Sky) hoists
- All types of slings
- Standing hoist
- Turntables
- Banana boards
- Handling belt
- Slide sheets
- Zimmer frame
In addition to this, the practical session will include
- Assisting mobility
- Assisting people in chairs
- Assisting people in bed
- The use of handling aids.
During the practical session the trainer will evaluate each learner
Assessment and certification
Continuous assessment by trainer and a Survival-linX Solution certificate, valid for one year, is issued for attendance.
Certification is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student through discussion and group participation. As good practice, we suggest that this is updated annually.
Infection Prevention and Control
This course deals specifically with infection prevention and control for the healthcare provider/carer working in the healthcare setting.
Who should attend?
Everyone who is directly involved in any client care within their work.
Course content
The course is designed to meet the both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills and includes:
- Why infection control is important
- The types of infection
- The body's own mechanism to fight infection
- The chain of infection
- How to prevent and control infection, including effective hand-washing
- Safe practice procedures
- Legislation and guidance
Assessment and certification
Continuous assessment by trainer and a Survival-linX Solution certificate, valid for one year, is issued for attendance.
